To maintain the intensity of their colour and their protective effectiveness, they require a very specific care ritual.

THE CARE RITUAL: RE-WATERPROOFING YOUR JACKET

A Barbour jacket should be cared for like a precious item. Once a year, it is essential to re-wax it to nourish the cotton.
Golden Rule: Never put your jacket in a washing machine. This would permanently remove the protective wax and make any re-waxing impossible.

The 4 steps to re-wax your item

If you prefer to entrust this task to an expert, you should know that you can have your jacket re-waxed at all Barbour corners. For DIY enthusiasts, here's how:

  • WAX PREPARATION

    Open your tin of Barbour Wax Thornproof Dressing. Place it in a container of very hot water for about 20 minutes so that the wax becomes completely liquid.

  • PRE-CLEANING

    While the wax is heating, clean the outside of your jacket using a sponge and cold water only. Avoid soap and hot water, which could damage the cotton's finish.

  • APPLICATION

    Keep the tin of wax in hot water throughout the entire process. Using a clean cloth, spread the melted wax evenly over the entire jacket. Pay particular attention to seams, creases, and areas that appear drier.
    Be careful not to apply wax to un-waxed textile parts (inner lining, velvet collar, inner pockets).

  • DRYING

    Hang your jacket on a sturdy hanger and let it air dry overnight in a room at moderate temperature.

ENSURING THE DURABILITY OF YOUR PART

  • IN CASE OF STAIN(S)

    For minor everyday mishaps, simplicity is key:

    • Use a dry cloth or a slightly damp sponge with cold water.
    • Rub gently so as not to alter the wax layer. Never use detergent.

  • CONSERVATION AND SUSTAINABILITY

    • Good Neighbors: A freshly waxed jacket can transfer a bit of wax onto other fabrics. Hang it up, away from other clothes in your wardrobe.
    • The Ideal Environment: Choose a dry and well-ventilated spot. Absolutely avoid proximity to an intense heat source (radiator, prolonged direct sunlight) which could melt the wax.
    • Frequency: For optimal protection, we recommend this ritual once a year, ideally just before autumn arrives.
