THE LEATHER CRUST: Softness and authenticity

Instantly recognizable by its velvety feel, split leather adds a raw yet infinitely refined charm to our accessories. Taken from the lower part of the hide, it is a supple, porous material that gains poetry as it patinates. Because it is natural and delicate, it requires special attention to preserve its pigments and unique texture.

Balzac Paris advice: Naturally porous, colored split leather can sometimes bleed. We recommend avoiding prolonged contact with light-colored textiles, especially in damp weather.

THE LEATHER CRUST: Softness and authenticity

Instantly recognizable by its velvety feel, split leather adds a raw and infinitely refined charm to our accessories. Taken from the underside of the hide, it is a supple and porous material that gains character as it ages. Because it is natural and delicate, it requires special attention to preserve its pigments and unique texture.

Balzac Paris tip: Naturally porous, colored split leather can sometimes bleed. We recommend avoiding prolonged contact with light-colored textiles, especially in damp weather.

  • The Essential Shield: Waterproofing

This is the key step to protect this material, which is sensitive to water.

    • The action: Before the very first outing, spray a waterproofing spray evenly from a distance of 20 cm (remember to shake the bottle well!).
    • Frequency: Repeat regularly to maintain an effective barrier against moisture and limit color transfer.
  • Weekly brushing

To maintain that "peach skin" look we love so much:

    • Use a suitable brush (soft brush or crepe brush) at least once a week. This helps remove dust and straighten the fibers to revive the texture.
    • Gentle touch: A simple brushing is often enough to remove light everyday dirt.
  • In case of rain

If your item has been caught in a downpour:

    • Allow it to air dry naturally. Never place it near a heat source (radiator or hair dryer), as this could stiffen the leather.
    • Once thoroughly dry, brush gently to restore the material's suppleness and fullness.
  • A tricky storage

    • Cotton pouch: This is the ideal home for your bag or shoes when they are not being worn. It protects them from dust while allowing the leather to breathe.
    • Maintain the shape: Avoid overfilling your bag to prevent stretching the leather or distorting its shape.
    • The ideal shelter: Store your item in a dry place, away from direct sunlight which could alter its colors.
  • Prohibitions

To preserve the original beauty of your item, avoid:

    • Dry cleaning.
    • Harsh products or smooth leather creams (which could stain the split leather).
    • Ironing.

Balzac Paris's tip: Unsure about a stubborn stain? Don't take any risks and consult a leather specialist or a shoe repairer who will know how to provide the appropriate care for this unique material.
